NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet has acknowledged the Commonwealth Government assurances that NSW will not be worse off as a result of any changes to the GST system.
“We believe that any changes to the GST system must reward States that reform and prepare for the peaks and troughs in the economy,” Mr Perrottet said.
“We believe that it’s not fair that NSW continues to subsidise inefficient states as well as states like Western Australia who do not plan for future downturns to their economies.”
“Western Australia was not complaining about the GST system at the peak of the mining boom but after squandering billions and not planning for the future they now come cap in hand asking for a bigger slice of the pie.”
Mr Perrottet said the NSW Government would carefully review the proposed changes to the GST and work with the Commonwealth Government to ensure NSW taxpayers were not left do the heavy lifting for underperforming states.
“Any changes would be best served by having all the states and territories agree. This should of course be possible where the Commonwealth has given assurances that no state or territory will be worse off.”
