NSW Budget: Increase in Child Protection Caseworkers

The NSW Government will invest $63 million over four years to boost the number of caseworkers working on the frontline, as well as deliver more casework support workers.

In the first year, $18 million will be invested, which will see:

• $9.3 million of new funding for 66 additional casework support workers
• $6 million of new funding for 42 additional caseworkers to support the frontline see more children at risk
• $3 million of new funding for 23 additional caseworkers for the Child Protection Helpline and 10 additional caseworkers in the Joint Investigative Response Teams (JIRT) in the first year (which will increase in the subsequent year)

Minister for Family and Community Services Pru Goward said the funding would continue the Government’s commitment to helping our most vulnerable children and young people.

“Our wonderful caseworkers are the frontline of child protection and at the forefront of our efforts to keep vulnerable children safe,” Ms Goward said.

“This investment will help our frontline caseworkers see more children at risk of significant harm.

“Better community awareness about child abuse and neglect, and how to recognise and report the signs has seen a rise in calls to the Helpline and our increased investment will help us continue this important service.”

“Having to protect children being hurt, often by the very people who are supposed to protect them, is one of the most heartbreaking evils we have to face,” Mr Perrottet said.

“Supporting vulnerable children and families is a priority for this government.”
